One of my other passions is video games so I thought I would post some here.-James
Today after many days of not watching something messed up I bring you a review of a movie that no one would consider messed up, The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou directed by Wes Anderson and starring Bill Murray. Where to start with this movie? This movie is a revenge film, but very funny. Bill Murray is at the top of his game, to be honest I think this is his best film hes been in. Of course theirs Caddy Shack, Ghostbusters, Lost In Translation, Groundhog's Day so many classic films. Wes Anderson is no slouch himself this man directed The Grand Budapest Hotel, Moonrise Kingdom, and The Royal Tenenbaums.
Synopsis: A oceanographer(Bill Murray) is set on revenge after his partner(Seymour Cassel) is eaten at sea by the Jaguar Shark.
The thing is when I review these movies most of them I haven't seen before, but the human centipede three and Old Boy I had seen before. I personally really enjoy doing these reviews because I get to see more movies that I wouldn't of otherwise seen before. Owen wilson which normally I would say nothing good about does a very good job in this. Willem Defoe plays a German crew member, and he is fantastic. I'll eventually get around to review another movie with him in it(Spoilers it's Antichrist). In conclusion.
I Wont get into the messed up scale or the strange scale so let's get to it.
How Good is the movie: 9/10
This movie is vibrant the colors are very overpowering, but in a good way. The directing and all the actors is fantastic. I wonder why this movie didn't get as much attention?
Have you ever thought about what it would be like to live inside of a novel? I'll tell you I certainly have. Before I begin reviewing this movie I must give you my history with H.P. Lovecraft. You must be thinking what does H.P. Lovecraft have to do with John Carpenter's film. This film from the titles of the books in the film to the title of the movie to the places. Even when Sam Neill is reading out of Sutter Cane's book he is in fact reading "The Haunter of the dark". I in fact love H.P. Lovecraft's short stories, I don't get scared very often, but every time I open up one of his stories and read I get scared. So first off I'm going to give you a bear bones bio on Howard Phillips Lovecraft. He was a weird fiction writer from 1917 to his death in 1937, he is most well known for creating the Cthulhu Mythos.
Synopsis: John Trent(Sam Neill) an insurance claim expert is hired to search for pulp fiction author Sutter Cane, but reality might not be what it seems.
First of all we must talk about The directing, John Carpenter(Halloween,The Thing, They Live) is still at the top of his game. The writing of it is good, the cinematography is fantastic, even though the movie came out twenty years ago it still seems fresh. The movie has a very odd feel about it. It gives you an uneasy feeling once you are introduced the the film. In conclusion.
Messed Up Scale: 3/10
It won't be giving you nightmares from the gore, it goes long stretches without gore.
Strange Scale: 6/10
If this is your first film by John Carpenter, It might be the strangest of them.
How Good Is the Movie: 8/10
It was very enjoyable and the references to H.P. Lovecraft were great for a fan like me.
Oh boy here we go, I was originally going to review all three next week, but I thought I should talk about the third and final in the series. The original came out in 2009 to less then favorable results in the box office, the second one came out in 2011 to much of the same. Now were here talking about the third one and uhhhhhhhh. The cinematography is better i guess. Once again this movie takes the view that the human centipede first and full sequence are both movies in this universe. Dieter Laser returns to play Bill Boss the warden of the prison which this movie is set in. Laurence R. Harvey also comes back as the Dwight Butler, an accountant how tries to keep the prison afloat. I'm kinda impressed by how many b list stars they got in this film. Eric Roberts,Bree Olson, and Tommy "Tiny" Lister.
The basic without spoilers plot synopsis of this film is, Bill Boss(Dieter Laser) and Dwight Butler(Laurence R. Harvey) are trying to keep their jobs with unusual means.
I really don't want to spoil anything cause I kind of recommend watching it just to feel weird feeling in your gut. at least that's why I watch movies like this, to feel uncomfortable. If you are going to watch this movie it's a good movie to watch with friends.
The acting isn't great, they chew the scenery, but in a way you would expect. In conclusion,
Messed Up Scale: 7/10 after seeing all three it might be the most tame of them all, but there is also scenes where you may feel very uncomfortable.
How good is the movie scale: 2/10 It's definitely not the best movie in the series, but if you like bad films, then watch it on netflix or other video streaming sites.
Well this week we begin with possibly the best film I'll ever review. This week is Old Boy(2003), this is the Korean version. Ten years after this one a U.S. remake came out directed by Spike Lee and starring Josh Brolin. First of all this will not be a comparison of the two films or even the original to it's manga rendition. I'll just let you know the manga is nothing like the first movie, and there was drastic changes done to the U.S. remake. This film was directed by Park Chanwook and is starring Choi Min-Sik as Oh Dae-su. In this review I'm going to attempt not to divulge the dark dark story, but I will give you a basic plot synopsis Oh Dae-su is an average business man and after a night of drinking he is abducted for fifteen years, and after the fifteen years he is released. Now he must find his captor, and the reason behind his imprisoning. In this movie there is basically two main characters with others sprinkled throughout. there is Oh Dae-su and Mido( a girl who is a chef at a restaurant where they meet) It is the story of them trying to find out who imprisoned him. I will say the cinematography in this film is beautiful, every shot, every scene is there for a reason. Be it long camera shots sweeping down a hallway, or a quick cut. They all have a purpose towards making this film great. The sound design is spot on. The actors are at the top of their game. In conclusion,
Messed Up scale: 6/10
This movie can be gotten through easily, but some parts might make you be like ewwww.
How good is the movie scale: 9/10
This movie made my favorite movies list under number four.
Thank you guys for reading, I'll be back in a few days with a new movie to review.-James
